Dear Matt Winter

I drove to New Orleans one day
with the goal of just seeing your face.
Three hundred miles and a hopeful heart,
that I’d somehow shine to you in the dark.

Walking up nervously to the venue,
I saw you standing there on the sidewalk.
You looked so statuesque sporting your favorite shades,
and for a second I felt my self-control fade.
Couldn’t speak, couldn’t breathe,
you literally stunned me.

I wanted to say something memorable,
something that would make you see
that I’m more than just another face in the crowd.
I’m a girl who felt changed,
the very first time I ever laid eyes upon you.
The way you carried yourself-
your mysterious, brooding, intriguing vibe,
made me feel something I can’t even begin to describe.

Never before has just the sight of someone had such an effect,
and not again since then as I recollect.
From Colorado to Florida to the Big Easy,
that feeling inside has not left me.
You recognized a shirt in NOLA,
and gave me your pick in a chivalrous way.
Face to face after the tunes came to an end,
you said you were glad I was able to attend.
Predictably I lost all sense and logic.
My fantasy of blowing you away with my charm drifted far, far away
but even so, I will never forget that fateful day.

My only wish is that the next time we meet,
your opinion of me will have been changed.
I hope you can see that I’m someone worth knowing,
someone worth befriending and maybe even loving.
I know it’s a long shot, but that’s how I hope you’ll see me.
and maybe this won’t have to be a love that can’t be.
