The Call

He beckons me to him,
From the very first.
Long have I made him wait,
Since the moment of my birth.

Thoughts of his ax hang heavy,
Just above my head.
Like the wings of an angel,
Wide-open spread.

His arms ready to receive,
like of an old friend.
Never losing hope, he's persistent
til the end.

Like the returned prodigal son's,
Long sought embrace,
None ever so sweet,
yet bitter laced.

With a sigh of relief,
He draws me in.
Eyelids shut now,
I'm at peace within.

The struggles and battles all over,
So ...
