Their Faces Are Dirty (Plus A Haiku)

The palace is gone,
There’s fire in the streets.
The ground shivered
Like the hearts of those left dying.

Their faces are dirty,
Their hearts, broken.
They’ve lived in poverty,
Now they live in pain.

The aftershocks persist,
Shaking them with fear,
Like the tears that
Fill their eyes.

Their souls in a pile
For everyone to see.
There are so many,
Hundreds of thousands, they say.

Picking up the pieces,
They are too big.
Don’t leave them alone.
Please, God, someone help!

He reached out his hand,
And pulls her from the rubble,
He has found his wife.
