Diane Wade Biography

I have only written one poem though I have to acknowledge that I believe it was actually inspired. I used to live by some woods and I would actually sit outside on the porch to smoke. (Ugh, I know) I noticed that when I'd flick the lighter without actually lighting it, the fireflies in the woods would respond by flashing back. They would actually flash the same number of times I would flash my lighter! While I sat there, the words to the poem just came pouring into me and I had to write them down! I love this poem as it reveals the joy I experienced when this occurred. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.)

The Fire In The Wood

At night I sit on my back porch
and gaze into the wood,
hoping soon that I will see
what others dream they could.

I flick my light not once but twice
for doing this I know
that soon my eyes, to my delight,
will see that dark wood glow.

First one small flash, then two and three,
and then there's four and more!
The flames begin to dance and play
like faeries dance in lore.

And as I sit and watch this spectacle,
I am amazed!
The wood that was so dark before
appears to be ablaze!

The fireflies glow, putting on their show
in yellow, green and red.
And then a few, a brave little crew
come dance around my head.

What a beautiful sight as I bask in the light
of these colorful flames at play.
To my chagrin, I frighten them -
to the woods they run away!

As quickly as the dance began
with flames that seem to glide,
the fire dims as gradually,
the dancing lights subside.

For now the wood stands dark once more.
Oh well, I knew it would,
but tomorrow night again I'll see
the fire in the wood!
