'Talking To Thin Air'

How do I know that I am distant from those near? I know.
They talk through me. Their eyes show mutual understanding.
Conspiracy in youth united by music, and software,
Resolved to move forward, break the mould, reject the old.
They are the new fly in the ointment of this old fogey, 'Out of touch',
I feel them say. 'Dinosaur, relic of the past, what does he know? ' Why?
They don't understand that's why.
It's like talking to thin air.

What do they know of the journey here? They don't.
The wrong turns, the detours,
The lessons learned. The truth that time brought with spring rain, and
Summers spent shaping the winter of the future that is here and now.
The laughter of defiance united by music, and the certainty of youth
Eager to challenge those obsolete obstacles, who talked to thin air.

Can I help them to understand that there is much to learn from me? I can't.
Time separates the old from the new, and it's like talking to thin air.
