Lonely
My neighbor lives across the street
Behind those shading trees,
So little left to see of him
Save doorway for his keys.
My bike he borrowed for a week
Returned a broken seat,
Apologies were unassumed
A handshake cool and weak.
He turned, I saw his image go
Behind his oaken door,
Protected him from thoughts outside
Or views they might distort.
Left was memory of his voice
A cacophony of sound,
A human being's interplay
More verbs than there were nouns.
I turned in hopes his shadow
(The company left behind) ,
Might follow me where there was none
And share a taste of wine.
Those moments begged that last hello
Resented its goodbye,
But I had drunk too much of this
To save myself inside.
