I Make A Little Adjustment To Our Marriage
It was a petty argument and yet
it was enough to keep me from sleep.
I took the dog and walked along the shore,
to the top of a sand dune to better see the stars.
The sky to the west was brilliantly studded
but oddly the eastern stars were eclipsed.
The eclipse seemed to spread and soon
I saw a planet approaching,
rolling slowly through the night
so low I could see the sand dunes on her beaches.
I know this sounds strange but consider
that like the countless monkeys
banging on typewriters who one day
will give us the lost poems of Sappho,
so the countless stars creating
and flinging bodies through space
had produced the twin of earth.
The planet began to pass overhead.
I grabbed the dog and leaped across,
and as I glided over
I saw floating towards me
a familiar being, also holding a dog,
who looked very much like me
although older and heavier.
We waved as we passed.
I landed with a little stagger,
tilted my head in time to see
the other fellow dust himself off from his stumble,
saw the tops of his shoulders and unruly hair
as he walked down the path I had just walked up.
After the earth I had left rolled silently along
into the night on its usual way through space,
I walked down the hill, the dog
very close by my ankles.
The door to my home was locked
but I fitted my key and entered to find
a beautiful woman, exactly my wife except
this wife was perfectly happy
I had painted the bedroom
powder blue instead of rose.
