The Riverdance

I've seen the dance of the riverstones
pebbles whitewashed to the colour of dry bones
dead with the life of burnt grass
and shiny as the look of burnished brass
I've been intrigued by this motionless dance
hoping that one day I might get a chance
to sit and dance on a spot
and be lost in my favourite thought
but I've guessed this freedom is not to be
for my soul is only half as free
as the pebbles on the riverbed
for my soul is in one place held
wherefore i have decided thus
like a wave to move without cause
to go ever forward with a roar
and retreat therefore with a bow
this dance has kept me with my soul
now i only wish it will let me go
