From my brown skin to my brown eyes.
From my curly hair to a girl filled with pride.
This is how identify.
But lately it has become something,
I've had to hide.

From my white mother to my black father.
To them I am just a daughter.
But to the world, I am no such thing.
People say you should only be one race,
But hey! Then where would I go?

I struggle to find my place,
In a world full of hate.
I can picture the face of Rodney King
As he lay in pain.
I can still remember the news of Trayvon Martin being killed.

It chills me to the bone that this is what the world has become.
Everyday I wonder,
Is this the last day I will see my father?
Everyday I wonder,
How much longer until race can become a thing of the past?

I don't want to wake up everyday and wonder
What unfortunate soul will die today?

Just because of the color of our skin,
we are treated like last night's leftover chicken dinner.
Just because of the color of our skin,
We are persecuted and lynched.

Is this the world you want your children to live in?
To be taught that it's ok to discriminate,
To be taught that that we are the inferior race.
Just because of the color of our skin.
We couldn't help that it's what we were born with.

Instead of hiding away,
You have to find a way to embrace,
Your heritage and everything that makes you who you are.
Because I pray for the day that we can all be treated the same.
