I Never Knew Myself

When I was born there was blinding terror
Cast out from the warm world in which I floated
I would have felt I had made a terrible error
But I never knew myself back then.

When I was young the days were crystalline and bright
I played on the mossy slopes of a stream and danced on the head of a pin
And I never once gave a thought to the coming night
But I never knew myself back then

When I was in my prime my love was my life
We sailed on the tides and flew on the wind
I was heedless of the coming strife
But I never knew myself back then

When I was old I could see the darkness on the horizon
I loved the light even though I felt the coldness closing in
No matter the cost I carried on
But I never knew myself back then

When I was gone and the night shades had bid me rest
I quietly dreamed of what might have been
I had done my best to be the best
But I never knew myself back then
