Dell'antico confine rimangono tracce. Insieme alla terra,
agli alberi, fino al mare.

Traces of ancient borders remain. Together with the land,
with the trees, as far as the sea.

La siccità inaridiva la foce del Lambro. Si camminava sulla
terra screpolata nel letto del fiume, fra i sassi.
In una pozza d'acqua era rimasta una famiglia di pesci,
ancora vivi.

The drought was drying up the source of the Lambro. People
walked over the cracked earth of the river bed,
between the rocks. In a puddle of water, a school of fish had remained,
still alive.

Non restava che imboccare la scala
e salire correndo
finché i passi diventavano pesanti
erano quasi fermi,
allora il sogno si interrompeva
proprio sul punto di essere afferrati.

and run up
until the steps became heavy,
almost still,

contro corrente vicino alla riva
si disperde dentro fili d'erba
lontana dal suo centro
la memoria fa un cammino a ritroso
dove una materia incerta
torna con molti frammenti.

As the river water moves
near the banks against the flow
spreads among grass blades
far from its center
memory finds its way back
to where an unresolved matter
returns with so many broken pieces.

Volano sulle correnti
di un invisibile oceano
che si suppone infinito
le diverse specie di effimere
dalla forma inconsistente.
Si manifesta allora
il principio di contraddizione,
benché duri soltanto un giorno o due
questo breve dominio,
effimero come dice il nome.

They fly over the currents

of an invisible ocean
that one takes for infinite,
diverse kinds of ephemera
of inconsistent form.
Then the principle of contradiction
is exposed,
since this brief dominion lasts
but a day or two,
ephemeral as the name says.
