The Common Beast

Bandy legged jealousy,
Everyone sees reflections in its eye,
Cries it has my nose, or cheek, or chin,
But no, the monster is not I,
No winged beast of air,
No footed one of land or sea,
No stalker in the darkest forest,
Has such foul claws as jealousy.
It broods underneath tables,
Great stark rumbles come from its chest,
You pat its shaggy head in front of friends,
Acknowledge its presence, make it a pet.
But when you lay your head upon your pillow,
When the moon has risen high through the sky,
The beast it does not slumber,
