Awnings Of Unreason

AWNINGS OF UNREASON

Doubts envelop him like
roadside back-burn smoke.
His confidence leaks as if held in
wickerwork vases. He's flawed
only seeing the moss side of the
trees, while warm cushions smother
the tops of the branches.
Many characters invade the empty
spaces in his psyche,
seeking re-birth inside
yet to be written covers.

A Magpie tries to steal a drink
from his eyes and fly into winter,
not unlike him, it fails. A single
Apostlebird stranded on the edge
of the afternoon, follows the shadows
slanting up the study walls.

The lines try to stretch into
a sketchbook evening, their
words floating away under
awnings of unreason.
