Others hope we attempt to pry

What Peace Sounds Like

People say that peace has no sound,
That is sings in the silence after war:
That lasting buzz after the last shot fires,
The dying ring of the last swords clang…
They are wrong.

Peace is the gasps of happy children
When a scorching day gets taken by rain
It is the thankful sigh that escapes the drying soil
As the first drop hits.

Peace is thunder rolling over open lands,
The clatter of the downpour against the ground.
It is the sizzle as sunlight starts peaking through,
And the ripple we imagine as a rainbow appears.

It is the escaping hiss of evaporating puddles,
Squeals from soaking feet being slapped across the house.
It is in the steam that rises from the hot tea
Of a couple seated on their balcony.

Peace sounds inexplicably similar
To the crackle of a fresh dish in the oven
It is clear blue skies and full stomachs
And careless notes in the air

Peace is a new-borns first laugh
Safe away in their parents' arms.
It is the sigh of lovers reunite
Even when nothing truly kept them apart

Peace is in the daily parade
Of soldiers who needn't fear for their lives
It is the steady rhythm of the city
And no threat of war

Peace is, in fact, quite noisy
Although we never stop saying
That it is a silent song
Because we never stop to listen.
