Hammering In Nails

Such a long, long time ago now. Me, up the ladder
You, stretched full length, passing nails. One by one
Eagerly you gifted them, gracefully I received them
And rhythmically whacked them home, blow by blow.
Standing in the shade of the old beech tree, I watch you
Another man, another ladder, another wall, another time
Deftly plucking the nails from your nail bag, one by one
Skilfully hammering them home, blow by effortless blow.
