A Garden

Nature planted nettles, ground elder, ragwort
randomly about my private little plot.
With pretty dasies, poppies and buttercups.

But this land is my land and nature must allow
a sophisticated gardener to clear it all away
and create a thing of beauty to adorn the land.

I'll have the most exotic hybrids, all from Wisley garden
and flowers from far away with proper latin names
Euphorbia robbiai, Allium and Centurea macrocephala

I'll dig and plant and lay them in orderly patterns
of colours and of scents to please a Chelsea judge
and I'll destroy evil bugs and spray the mossy lawn

But as the seasons turn and snow and frost arrive
my pampered flowers will die before my eyes
nature reclaims her own and holds her sway
and nettles, ragwort, ground elder, dasies, buttercups, dandylions and poppies lie dorment and await another day.
