He was never part of our picture,
just a stranger crossing sunlight,
caught forever mid-stride,
one foot in our family's summer.

The kitchen light hums at four in the morning,

Morning In A Small Key

The kettle hums before the light arrives,
and someone in the next apartment
turns a dial through static and weather.
Morning enters in a small key —
a half cup of coffee gone cold,
a sparrow arguing with the gutter.

I have started keeping notes
on the smallest hours:
how the stairwell smells of rain at six,
how the baker's window fogs
long before the first customer,
how nothing urgent happens
in the blue part of the day.

These are not poems, not yet.
They are just the rooms
I walk through while the city
wakes at its own pace —
a bicycle bell, a door unlatched,
the long exhale of a bus
kneeling at the corner.

If you read this far,
maybe your mornings keep
a similar music. I would like
to hear how your day begins.
