Corn Rows

Corn rows

'Those rows in the backfield, they need more water, '
Mom whispered.
'More cow dung, ' Dad claimed.
I guess he meant more carefully manicured manure.

It's not as if I am new to this old field.
It's not as if I am a hired hand or something.

I have planted these rows before, seen rain
change to sunshine, change to rain.
I have seen floods like tears run through
old furrows between rows, between hard dust.
I have carefully tended these corn rows before.
I have even pictured them growing firm roots.

Lind Grant-Oyeye was born in Nigeria. She has work published in several literary magazines world wide and recently won the UHRSN human rights poetry award.
(Poem published by NVN for black history month and has received great reviews) .

Background history: Cornrow Braiding Originates in Africa: Like many other 'Africanisms' in the new world, knowledge of African hairstyles survived the Middle Passage. Heads were often shaved upon capture, ostensibly for sanitary reasons, but with the psychological impact of being stripped of one's culture. Re-establishing traditional hair styles in the new world was thus an act of resistance; one that could be carried out covertly. Photo source: Yarbrough, Camille. Cornrows. lind grantoyeye Quotes

Quote by Lind Grant- Oyeye, Nigerian writer: 'No greater liar exists than a mother who passes on lies to their daughter: lies on how to behave, how to live, how to please a man, how to please society and how to become untrue to true self and purpose'

On writing: if nothing teaches you patience, writing would. it takes up to a year most of the time for a writer to be almost satisfied with their work; it takes six months to a year to hear back from literary outfits; between rejections editing and re-editing and finally making it to the pages of a magazine or book stand, you realize life is all about editing rejections and coming out stronger on the other side.!

Of writing: A writer grows wise fast and also never ages; you see things from the point of view of both a child and an old sage. You see things from the point of view of your own gender and the opposite gender. I guess you see the world from a 360 degrees point of view. Lind grant-Oyeye
