1.

Sometimes
At night
When I can’t sleep
And all I can focus on is how tight my skin feels
...

I hate the cold
I hate the way it freezes my fingers,
Making them too numb to play violin
Making me feel useless and unsuccessful
...

If people are water,
I am not your gentle stream,
The crystal water flowing round rocks,
Never battering.

Cocoa

Sometimes
At night
When I can’t sleep
And all I can focus on is how tight my skin feels
I go downstairs
And put a mug of milk in the microwave
For two minutes to make cocoa
And do nothing but think.
And I think about how the world feels wrong
How I am not who I am supposed to be
How nothing is going the way that I planned
Back when I was a kid
I think about the way that no matter how much I try
I will never be
Enough
Never be good enough
Because I am doing it wrong
I am doing
It
Wrong
And at this point I am on the cold tiles of the floor and nothing makes sense anymore
And the fluorescent lighting is harsh on my eyes
And the cold has a way of making my ribs ache
And I am so goddamn scared of the future it hurts
But then the microwave goes beep
And I stand up
And make cocoa as my hands shake
