Some time ago journalism died a bloody death, and the profession went two directions; activism, and tabloid entertainment (sometimes both) .
The Media undermines the justice system. It destroys any notion of the presumption of innocence or due process.
The mob reads something, they immediately assume it's true, regardless of the source or validity.
Judges are elected by the same mob; in a perfect world perhaps that would not alter their judgement, but this isn't a perfect world and they cannot appear soft on crime, even if that crime is fabricated by purposeful misrepresentation and exaggeration. Once accused there is no such thing as innocence; the lynch mobs form with pitchforks and torches.
