A Mother's First

Six

billion people in the world

yet,

one solitary soul

arrests me.

his head seemingly miss- shaped

body disproportioned.

his face scrunched in protest or in cry

like a shriveled prune

or red

red like an angry red balloon

ready to pop at any moment.

his smile lopsided, akin to elvis at times;

comical coming from

a month old chinese baby.

nevertheless

he is simply, implicitly

beautiful.

i watch him

mesmerized.

enveloped in content.

solely for him

do i cease

in the midst of

sleeping,

eating

or talking.

so significant

are his wants.

i want to shield him

from all things

evil

ugly

wrong.

i want to give him

the universe

with all its suns, moons and stars…

i cannot.

so i shall give him

all i can.

even lay down my life

for this solitary soul,

for my son,

joaquim.
