The Best Poem Of Mike Sheriff

Chat-Up Angst

in my attempt to impress
to woo and beguile
i let out a joke
to which there’s no smile

awkward and shot-
down by this defeat
i cut short my laugh
& stare at my feet

i feel like an idiot
& sense you’d agree
to match there’s no loser
greater than me

embarrassed & nervous
my cheeks a'bloom
i scurry on past
and on out the room

later i promise
myself that next time
i’ll ‘come off’ much cooler
& you will be mine
