I am not your average
Totem-pole carving,
Feathered head-dress wearing,
Hogan dwelling, rug making,
Ululating, reservation-living,
Warped tongue speaking, Indian

No, I am not that Indian
But, yes, I am an Indian
I am not that cliché
I am but another

I am Columbus's failure
I am his vessel gone adrift
I am the wrong path he took
I am the people he never found

We wronged him, Indians and Indians
Right people in the wrong place
Wrong people in the right place
Find me now Columbus, for I have arrived
Where you once looked for me
