70's Kid Poem by louise carter

70's Kid

Born in the early 70's
When fog was thick and black
When winter smelt like coal fires and we came in through the back
When blackouts were quite often
We had candles just incase
When your mother would spit on her hanky
To wipe your dirty face
When neighbours shouted " only me"
When the popped round for gab
When ice cream came in boxes
And you cut it by the slab
When your Nan would dig an orange out
From the bottom of her bag
When you accidentally chewed a pip and it would make you gag
When your dad would make a steery
With the wheels off the pram
And he would take us round the block dead fast but told us not to tell our mam
Those good old days from my childhood
When life seemed so carefree
When all we had to worry about was what we were having for our tea
Sometimes when I think back
I mourn for days long past
I didn't realise way back then that those days would not last
