POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
NPR reported on the very high rates of obesity and overweight in US vets.

The famous historians Will and Ariel Durant wrote that Caesar's rapidly moving armies were largely vegetarian. Former syndicated writer for the Washington Post, Colman McCarthy, cited this in one of his columns.

1 On the other hand, US vets are 80% obese or overweight. Why?
Too much meat. Too much dairy. Too much sugar. Too many colas. Too much alcohol.

2 In addition, soldiers who never learn to cook but simply go through a mess hall queue are food handicapped when leaving the service.

3. Overeating can be stress or pain related. Soldiers experience stress from

a following hierarchy orders which violate conscience
b following hierarchy orders from control freaks
c the loss by death or injury of their peers
d. separation from family
e. witnessing the deaths of civilians, children, seniors, animals etc.
f. injury to the individual soldier from bullets, vaccines, and myriad other attacks
g. exposure to depleted uranium, other radiation, to oil fire petrochemicals etc.

The fact that soldiers never had to learn how to pay a rent check or search for work or write a resume....is a factor in the skyrocketing rates of veterans' homelessness and suicide.
