A Beautiful Day Poem by Joan Marques

A Beautiful Day

The sun smiles at the dancing butterflies
As clouds play tag in the heavenly skies

A hummingbird dwells on a honey source
A canoe explores the river course

An older couple holds hands on the bench
A little boy launches his boat in the trench

An open window releases the guitar song
A mother goes shopping - her tot tags along

A businessman's bribing his way to the top
The light just turned red - the carwheels now stop

The homeless holds up his rough hand for a dime
A nerd formulates a definition of 'crime'

A baby is born and a new mom is made
A gardener takes a quick break in the shade

A cat takes a bath and then yawns long and broad
An auditor detects a huge company fraud

A woman in high heels forgets who she was
A dog licks itself the way every dog does

The mountains are clear but the air smells like rain
The crowd in the station awaits the next train

The peace demonstration is peaceful and quiet
The reporter's bummed because there's no riot

A lazy man wants to invent something great
He hopes that his bright idea won't come too late

The drivethrough is busy - the crowd wants to eat
It's rush hour - the traffic is jammed in the street

Soon it will be night and the folks will be home
Except for those watching the game in the dome

Then... it's time for bed - what a great place to stay
It's the end of an ordinary yet beautiful day
