A DREAM

I had a dream
And in this dream I was a king
And king to be,
And my fair maid
Though no queen
Was a queen
And queen to be.
We had a love,
A love forbidden
Of a prince and a lowly maid too;
She was love and I was love
Yet as lovers in hiding,
She was fair
And I am strong
Yet as a knight to a thousand dragons.
For my love and her love
Was weighed down by custom's place,
Still love grew strong
Complaints stronger.
For as king and a maid
And a dissenting town of murmuring youths
Because a king and a maid
Share a love greater than customs age
With our love we stood
Against forks and rakes
On a street's parade
For the council and the queen mother
Was a force untold
Stealing my love away
In lust's dark night
And as a poor lowly king
Yet no king to be
For his love and a love
Is no longer love to be
And so, I the king
To the sword's edge
Gave my love's breathe to thee.
For on death, and a death
Was shared on the same
Night of evil deed.
For my love, and her love
Kissed a lover's goodbye
On different rungs of the earth's end.

And so my dream
Was a dream of a lover's sighs and weeps.

For I was love
And she was love
For I was no king
Nor she my princess to be.
