A Girl After The Storm Poem by Dave Dunn

A Girl After The Storm

A Girl After The Storm

The seas were calmer now and the wind had fallen to a whisper
A girl standing on the sea wall gazed out at the gloomy horizon
Where the grey sky seemed to merge with the sea as if they were hugging
Around her lay the scattered remains of broken trees and flotsam
Some blown around from the wooded area just along the coast
Some washed up by the mighty waves of that vigorous autumn storm

The girl breathed deeply, sampling the mixed aromas on the salty air
Hints of diesel fuel merged with the slightly dusky smell of sap and ferns
Further along the coast the aftermath was being cleared by a group of men
A few extra strong beats from her heart acknowledged her own concerns
Swelling up inside her were slight misgivings regarding her own personal storm
The row that had disrupted her life just before the winds and waves came

She mused on the strong associations she would have to look back on
The damage wrought by the weather echoed the turbullance in her mind
Losses of homes and property were painful enough for the islanders
Losses in her own life would leave invisible scars for quite some time
But she took comfort from watching the skies brighten and the debris cleared
Sometime soon she thought there will be sunshine and all will once again be fine

A few minutes later a hint of sun did break throught the clouds
With it came extra warmth and colour and sparkles on the wet debris
Her spirits lifted and a rush of warmth surged through her
She turned and walked back towards her home with a sense that she was now free
It would take time for all the clearance and repairs to be made
But now she felt there was a new begining and she thought, maybe a new me
