A Life Fulfilled Poem by simon thorpe

A Life Fulfilled

Rain and tears pour down the window of my life
Dark, dank drudgery shrouding the light
They say where there’s life there is hope
But for me an inexorably endless tunnel awaits

I cling to hope like an alcohol clinging to a whisky bottle
Light could enter my life if only I opened the window
Fear stops me as it always stops me
Fear and loathing that I don’t deserve happiness.

I see children laughing and lovers embracing
A fairground of delights, lighting up the world
I am still in shadow reaching out for salvation
Reaching for a hand that will never come

Frost gave me a choice of roads to take
Instinct pointed me towards the path of my destiny
I felt alone, lost like a child
Until I saw the glowing, beseeching flame in the window ahead

My sins are behind me now
I look forward without inhibition
I live life through my children
Responsible, caring, a decent human being at last
