A Little Bit Of A Lot Of Blah - Poem by Shikha Gupta

And everything else in between
Really doesn't matter.

It's about pretend friends
And M'n'Ms
And fleeting Sunday afternoons
Wet hair in your face
The smell of plastic tangerine shampoo
The smell of sleep
Of familiarity and distances
And familiarizing yourself with distances.

About all the lies you have to tell
So that you don't know where you end
Where you begin
About crying a single tear
Into your coffee
Your mattress
Looking at the colour change
From red
To dark red
As it disappears
And wishing you could too.

It's about day-dreams
And being silly
And hang-ups that seem to kill you
About bubble wrap and books
And full shelves and vacant spaces
About fathers putting their daughters to sleep
And mothers
And sisters
All reflecting somewhere in broken distant pasts
Gathering dust
And those million little things
Filling the gaps
That you tread upon
Toe by toe.

It's about playing with your straw
Trying to find your eyes in your ice-tea
And shaking your head
To the music of melting ice
And frozen 'no's
Since nineteen ninety-nine
About feeling like shit
And feeling like a girl
And feeling happy.

It's about days spent
Of where they went
One day lost
Two days lost
Three days lost
About autobiographies not written by you
Dear Jerome walked away with the prize
And things that get under under your skin
Doors that won't shut
Pieces of puzzles that don't fit
Voices that hang in the air above you
Like damp clothes and soap
In the rain
That washes away nothing.

And everything else in between
Really isn't worth it.
