A Memory I Still Chase Poem by Roshan Mutum

A Memory I Still Chase

You were the first face my eyes ever knew,
Now you're a shadow I can't see through.
I search for you in every crowd,
But you're nowhere now — not even a sound.

The longing hasn't left my chase;
I wander where people come to rest.
In every corner, every place —
If you're hiding there, you leave no trace.

I try to see you with closed eyes,
The face that's fading, bit by bit.
I try to see you in the quiet night,
But you're no longer part of it.

I won't call out to you again,
The one who asked me to let go.
I won't keep hope of your return —
Some stories end, and I now know.

I won't go searching anymore,
Won't wave you back like before.
I've learned to walk without your name,
But something in me feels the same.

Before time dares to erase your face,
And your smile is lost without a trace,
I hold it gently — like a rhyme,
A fading verse against all time.

I close my eyes, and still I try —
To find you in the dark behind my eyes.
The one I loved, the one I miss,
The one this world no longer keeps.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
" A Memory I Still Chase" is a reflection on the quiet ache of longing — not just for someone who is gone, but for a connection that once felt eternal. It explores the silent search we carry within us long after goodbyes are spoken — the kind of searching that lingers in crowded streets, in silent places, and in dreams we revisit with closed eyes. The poem is both an elegy and a release — capturing the conflict between memory and acceptance, presence and fading, love and letting go. It's for anyone who has ever held on to a smile that time threatens to erase, yet still found beauty in remembering.
