A Mountain Poem by David Mcdonald

A Mountain

Enormous and round the great mountain rises.
Gray-green with pine and oak and granite.
Static? Hardly. Just slow.
No human can grasp its growth.
Too quiet to catch the eye and so big it becomes background.
The towering tortoise shell hides its hot heart within.
It has suffered thousands of fiery summers and the weathering ages of winds and water that scar its sides.
It swells upward still, and it will survive man and all surface life.
Its hot rock blood will flow for eons,
Far below, beyong our reach.
