A Poem For Your Handsome Feet Poem by Romella Kitchens

A Poem For Your Handsome Feet

Beneath the night darkened covers, they come out.
Somewhat long, slender like two slivers
of moonlight rays paired together.
I am aware of your sleep and can regard that
which most do not understand while the
sands on the beach by our rental cabin shift
back and forth on the wind on their
own silent song.
Your feet are marked by ancestry.
They have the smooth skin of dynasty after
dynasty.
They have strode into palaces as your ancestors
then sat upon the throne.

Slender like two slivers of lunar envisioning.
Perfectly paired.
Masculine and real. Yet, gentle, articulated.
And, those darling toes…
These are quiet observations in the midnight
hours as you sleep, your breath this fervid
humming bird just above your chest.

You pad into the kitchen in the morning to
pour yourself a cup of coffee, your bare
feet purposeful, still on display.

I stare at them, at you.
I smile.
You smile back.
You must never know what I am thinking.
