A Simple Note

I read your letter just today
Unopened until now
The one I nearly threw away
But wouldn't leave my hand, somehow...

So long ago written to me
The words locked far inside
The dreaded words my eyes would see
In yellowed paper, sat beside...

The lamp would shine and break my heart
Illuminate the sad goodbye
And all my happiness depart
So kept in darkness, lamp and I...

I closed my mind to what was there
I trained myself to block the pain
Hardened heart, to winter's air
Another year, had passed again...

No other did this thing, I guess
I turned myself to silence, caught,
To think that you would not say yes
Defiled my mind, of you I thought...

To wreak the havoc on this love
Imagine what was there to read
And pray to Heaven, God above
To ease my hope, my only need...

This I looked upon each day
Tortured was I, but longed to know
Each word, and thought you had to say
Though darkness had nothing to show...

I closed my eyes to soften night
I dreamed of words, and what would hold
And what was sent that held me tight
Keep me inside, this heart from cold...

But all these years have taken toll
Left me to wonder what my days
Would there be shreds left of this soul
Lost in the memories of your ways...

So open now, the lamp is bright,
And leaves me nothing I can do,
This simple note read in the night,
And all you wrote was, 'I love you'....
