A Snow Covered Garden Poem by Simon Morgenstern

A Snow Covered Garden

I could not resist to watch,
despite the chill that pinched my spine,
to look away I simply could not,
a sight so eerie and divine.

Her eyes blue with tears of ice,
face as pale as winters frost,
motionless beautiful she lies,
in a garden, now long lost.

In her arm a mirror broken,
around her scattered frozen shards,
on the lips the last words spoken,
descending slowly to the dark.

And the flowers, oh how they have grown,
defying the early snows,
waiting for the brake of dawn,
all carefully placed in rows.

I stood there an watched for a while,
where has this picture go wrong,
why does she who looks so saintly,
to this graveyard now belong.

I stood there and tried to cry,
then i sat down for a while,
even when i ought to grieve,
all that i could do-a smile.

And with that smile i left the place,
So elegant, a work of god,
buried now she lies embraced,
by the flowers stained with blood.
