A Window On The World Poem by Bill Wright

A Window On The World

It was an image which shocked the world,
Face down upon the shore,
That desperate, drowned Syrian boy,
No more than three or four.

We all know that battles rage,
In many distant lands,
'It's terrible, something must be done',
As we sit and wring our hands.

A picture is worth a thousand words,
Often said, but rarely true,
This time it is no different,
What can Joe Public do?

Thousands are fleeing every day,
Heading for Europe's coast,
Several million more displaced,
And we'll take fifteen thousand, at most.

We all have lots of questions,
Shake our heads with a weary sigh,
But just how many thousands more
Children will be allowed to die.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this after seeing a picture of a little Syrian boy washed ashore on a beach.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

I believe I've seen the picture. Last year around this time you couldn't open a news site without seeing Syrian headlines, mostly in regard to the migrant crisis. As it stands now Donald Trump seems to be the thing the media wants to focus on... As a people we tend only to care about these tragic situations briefly. As soon as something else starts selling more newspapers or ad space we move on. Sad but true. Powerful poem Billy about a heart wrenching subject
