A Winter's Night Poem by Francis Duggan

A Winter's Night

The night it is chilly the sky it is dark
And the spur winged plover he calls in the park
As above his breeding territory he fly
The sound of aggression is in his wild cry
He has a partner and eggs to defend
In his breeding Season he trusts none as a friend
A pretty enough bird when seen seen in the daylight
For to defend his borders he is one who will fight
The male brush tail possum few as aggressive as he
He snarls on high branch of old gum tree
He fights for his borders and for the right to mate
For him dispossession means an uncertain fate
The night it is wintery the sky it is dark
And in the nearby yard the guard dog does bark.
