About You Poem by Rachel Harris

About You

If I was an artist
I’d paint something beautiful
Something like a heart
With colors whirling round
So much business
On the edges of the soul
That it is almost lost
Beneath the colors
Wherein I glimpse
Pieces of things
So small and fast
I only enjoy them
For a moment
Then they are gone

If I was a builder
I’d construct a box
With bits of everything
Around a something
Quite quiet and young
I’d fill the box
Full of animation
Running in circles
To set your heart
Beating vivaciously
Can’t slow down
Looking for something
Or for nothing
But not where it is

If I was an orator
I’d give speech
About many things
All things
Except that one
Something wonderful
I’d meant to say
Forgetting my point
Making up another
But not sure
Where I was going
What I was getting at
Thinking it will be fine
Anyways

If I was a hiker
I’d climb a mountain
The one with the path
Heading steadily
Somewhere, I hope
It’s a hard mountain
But I look back
There’s a higher
Steeper mountain
Rest over its peak
I left it behind
For the mountain
That’s not-so-hard
But has no end

If I was a poet
I’d write a poem
About myself
But really
About you
