After A Certain Age Poem by Shalom Freedman

After A Certain Age

After a certain age
There is no life
Without trouble and suffering
To live with and through the pain
And do one's best for joy and happiness
Perhaps this is the courage G-d wants of us.

Ralph Waldo Emerson made a similar statement about our emotional discomfort after a certain age. The word and concept of HAPPINESS is inadequate to express our life fully. There is something ineffable in our awareness and I think a poem like yours answers this need to both express our role in the world and to be silent before the Mystery of it. Love and Respect are the emotions which must prevail.
