Almost True Poem by John Yaws

Almost True

Have you ever sat beside the road-
And shivered in the wind?
And as you watched the passing cars..
The loneliness seeped it?

And told yourself, "It's what I chose..
I like this kind of life".
While the need for love and company
Did cut you as a knife?

I guess those lies are almost true-
But is that close enough?
To almost win a fight to death-
Can end up pretty rough.

To almost have a happy home-
And children and a wife...
Will leave you in the cold alone,
A mighty sorry life.

To almost make your mark in life-
Just means you're gonna lose-
I fear you'll find no comfort in...
This life of almost trues.
