Am I Listening? - Poem by Sonali Dalal

Words surround me,
but am I listening?

Inane talk floats over me,
covering me in its gossamer cloud.
failing to gather sense of it
I let it pass over me.

I look at faces around me,
animated and engrossed.
Sound waves go up and down.
Trying to swim in the current,
I make an attempt to be still.

Realising futility of it all,
restlessness takes over me.
Searching for a peaceful nook
I let soundless world take over me
