Amy's Cat Poem by John Davie

Amy's Cat

"Why do you just sit there and stare at me all the time? ! "
I asked of my friend, furry fluffy feline
Shock of my life, my small cat replied
Made me wonder if I am still Queen of the Pride

"Well quite honestly I just can't quite figure you out?
Are you a really huge me? Or am I small you?
You look different, which casts a large shadow of doubt
to your origins as feline, definitely not through and through

Who, what, when are you? Why at me, do you stare?
Now and then you say words in a language we share
You're a big hulking lump and your feet crash like lead
Please stop trying to stand, on my tail, Clumsy-legs

Safe to say, on reflection, your behaviour's most strange
I just don't think how upstanding cats should behave
But on other paws, you do a great job for our pride
We're well fed, glossy coated and more than alive.

Is it me? Is it you? Who's in Control?
I'll rub, up against you, if you fill up my bowl
but if you were as small as a mouse I might STRIKE!
I'm THE predator, Hunter; it's not, about like.

Without me, I very much doubt you'd survive
One day you should join me, hush! Not a word
Perimeter, carefully, meticulous stride
Protect, check, alert! A small creature, a bird
Perform puppet-shows, once it had already died
Pat-a-Cake, round chair legs, stalk a make-believe herd
Spend a day preening whiskers and cleaning our fur
But for now I am going to just sit here and Purr

I can't help myself, I am, completely, bemused
As to whom it is that you are, and my relation to you."
