An Environmental Hero Poem by Francis Duggan

Of his older brothers and two sisters his mum and dad feel more proud
Since he is one not interested in material success and is not easily cowed
When it comes to environmental matters by the law of the land
He is presently serving a year of prison time for making a stand

On behalf of old growth trees in the park of the town
That by the workers of the developers have since been cut down
The developers did want him out of the way
For his anti development stand this the price he does pay

He is an environmental hero of him one can say
But his sort have never been public heroes and are not heroes today
By the materialist majority who uphold the law
Who dismiss those who love their Earth Mother as those with a personality flaw

He is a great person but the government says no
That to the progress of the Nation he is a foe
He is of a law breaking minority and majority rule
For anti development disturbances his type are the fuel

His mum and dad not even proud of him but he does not care
Since they are of the pro development majority and not even environmentally aware
A hero to a few but sadly not to all
His name will never be on a memorial wall.
