And Even Now Poem by Mark. A Heathcote

And Even Now

I filter fresh coffee.
One cup after another
Till I'm left shaking alone
Like a candle in a windy enclave
Remembering your name
Wondering if you still look
And taste the same.

I drink neat whisky and gin.
And even now, I dread the courage it took
To go dry
And leave you
At the last curtain call offstage
Oh, I remember playing.
Romeo and Juliet, Juliet and Romeo

Oh, I remember the love and the pain.
Hmm, oh, what bliss it was.
To kiss your lips and dream
It was like a dark caffeine to my soul.
I flittered away each day.
I flittered away each night with a little less honey
Till you were gone.

It was as if the divine had come.
Come to shake me down to my very foundation.
It was as though the divine had now come-
To quench his own thirst in me
And later, having done so, let me go.
Without so much as a tender word.

And even now, I dread the courage it took
To go dry
And leave you, dear
Darling, like coffee and cream
I flittered away each night with a little less honey
Till you were gone.
One cup after another
Oh, and the nights turned cold.
Like a candle in a windy enclave
Blown out, remembering, or was it I who was forgetting your name?
