... And The Hatchet? Poem by Malcolm Wheatman

... And The Hatchet?

Between the midnight marble stones
That mark the rest of noble bones,
I saw some humble wooden crosses.
Could there be, among the bosses,
Workers? Have they now all found,
At last, a peaceful common ground?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem came to me as I was driving down the M6 around Wolverhampton where on a hill there is a cemetery with headstones and wooden crosses. I had to learn the words as they came to me and memorise them, not being able to stop or record them at the time. The capital and labour antagonism is legendary.
