Another Good Man Gone Soon Poem by Benjamin Alonge

Another Good Man Gone Soon

There lies he in his bed
In a room constructed by spades
One whose door won't unlock
Not by a million bead of tears

Soil he was
Now covered by a sheet of sands
A lamp
Flamed that all could see
A fireplace
Where the coldhearted found hospitality
A balm he was
To every hurting feeling

Loved by many
Hated by plenty
The reason many smiled
The same plenty frowned
A spectator I am
He really was a good man
Pride of the Sun
Superlative under her light's scan

19th November
This day I remember so clearly
One no one saw wearing doom
'Cause he woke up robed
In his happy smiley

His first, second, third
To his ninth and a half trod was so kingly
He was about taking his tenth
But got humbled to the ground
He opened his mouth
Ready to speak
But his voice
By silence got bound

'He still breathes'
Some lips flapped those words out
That he could survive
We tried all we had in our clout

Lo and behold
Death appeared in his garment sewn of blood
He apprehensively pleaded
But Death's garment needed a collar
Darkness yawned
The tongue of evil fanned a wind
Whirled angrily
Pitched him amid
His light
At it's tender glow swept away

I stood still
Lost in deep sadness
My tongue sealed
Whole being in disarray
Then my grandpa's words
In my head came echoing
'Pa told me good men don't last'
