As I Lay ……..


I lay reclining on my fine ornate bed,
Looking out the gilded window at the sky,
Several thoughts came to my gullible mind,
One was most untoward - the wish to die.

I was taken by surprise at the unusual wish,
So I sat straight up in bed to muse on it,
I began to think deeply for the logic,
That lay behind the strange, unreasonable bit.

I began recollecting events of my childhood,
The best time of my long, exciting life,
Loved and protected by my parents I was,
With simplicity and innocence it was rife.

As an extrovert teenager I loved my existence,
Danced and sang the youthful days away,
I also excelled at the academic structure
The future zoomed bright- as sun's rays.

As an adult I held a lucrative job,
Got married to the love of my life,
Reached the top of the office hierarchy,
My confidence showed in my stride.

I had my fair share of life's problems.
My only son left me and went on his own,
My parents died, I divorced my wife.
But what is life without ups and downs!

Then I retired. Ah! That was welcome too.
Having done my duties and built a gold nest,
It was time to fulfil all my personal dreams,
I had time and money to do what I liked best.

I had nothing more of interest on earth now,
I had been on the moon and red Mars too!
I was getting old, bored and disgruntled,
I felt a strong urge to do something new.

The only place I had not visited was Heaven.
Death was the way to journey there, we know.
Science had, as yet, not found any other way,
To the mystic land, where I desired to go.

I understood now the working of my mind.
Wonderful life had given me all it had to gift,
I was eager for what heaven had in store for me,
But I had to wait for a call before I could shift.

I knew God's clarion call would come some day.
I would meet him and visit his beautiful home
This thought brought peace to my troubled soul,
Till then I should live according to His protocol.
