Ashes Poem by Atticus Mortimer

Ashes

Pain strikes through,
like lightning on a dry tree,
igniting my nerve endings,
like a bonfire of intense feeling,
my eyes cringing like crinkling leaves,
my fists balled like charred back,
and finally my knees crumple,
like a tree falling to the charred ground,
as the forest burns around it
