Asylum Poem by Marshall E Gass

Asylum

All over the place, nowhere to go
as fenced in as a box
with four walls and barbed wires
sanity lasts only a few seconds at a time
Scream the night cold
with a rasping voice

I saw them all
with vacant glassy wet eyes
as if the soul evaporated
leaving bright and bruised pupils
staring everything. A blade of grass takes time
to understand

Peace comes when the meds are counted
and the plastic waterfall washes
down the bitter taste of life

Sullenly death haunts every corner
they gather into loose knots
looking out the window
at a world not moving
but a mind racing to sleep
forever.
