Aunties Be Like by: Joseph Edwards

Ohhh Aunties
Aunties be like opinions you didn't ask for
Call them the rumor mill or the judgement hall
Because Aunties be like a busy body gossip girls
On crack
Yes, Aunties be like, kids these days have no respect
Then talk about everyone behind their backs
Comments about your cousin's weight
Your brother's refusal of med school
But at least they are married with children
To me Aunties be like, come La, learn to cook,
No one will marry you if your Roti is not round
Sorry Aunty
But I tried, I swear
Believe me I have done it all
Match, eHarmony, Indian Singles, Indian Cupid
And even an app called Quack Quack
Fast forward
I found him the one and in doing so I am learning she
My Aunty is beautiful, children are beautiful
Families are beautiful, and I want a family
Like my Aunty's, this beautiful Aunty full of joy
With a family, one that makes her and me feel wanted
Fast forward
We get married in the sun
Kid 1 is fun,2 is kind, and 3 is habit
Fast forward
The love begins to fade
He sees me as a housemaid
A nurse or a nanny
He earns and I bake cakes out of his disdain
Yes thats how he looked at me that night
Like I had no choice but to fulfill my duty to him
He takes all of me, even the parts I want to keep for myself
I don't want to lay with him anymore and pretend I liked it
But a wife must please, acting on the outside
And painfully screaming within
He will love you no matter what, my Aunty said
Fulfill your duty she reminded me these things happen
I ask, to you too Aunty
She can not speak details, only able to lower her head and nod
More alike than ever before but how can this be
Because we could have said no
But I guess that's not how Aunties be like
